# Settings

# Settings

Settings holds your stake presets, your risk limits, the safety switches, the theme, the
notifications and your sessions. Use this page to change one of them, or to look up a
limit. Back to the [guide index](index.md). Trading words are explained in the
[glossary](glossary.md).

## In short

* Open **Settings** from the bottom of the left rail, from the top-bar menu, from the menu
on a phone, or with `g` then `s`.
* The page has eight sections: **Trading**, **Risk limits**, **Safety**, **Appearance**,
**Account**, **Notifications**, **Hotkeys** and **Session**. On a desktop, the list at
the left takes you to a section. On a phone, each section opens as its own page.
* There is no **Save** button. A typed value saves when you press `↵` or leave the field. A
switch or a checkbox saves when you change it.
* A change that makes a limit safer saves at once. A change that makes it less safe asks
  for your password.

## The basics

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/dimsum-labs/XietQvgM6uXNXdeN/guides/user/images/settings.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=XietQvgM6uXNXdeN&q=85&s=0f28cff6f2c0b8501bf49aed8b9a91ae" alt="Settings: the section list on the left, stake presets and risk limits on the right" width="900" height="610" data-path="guides/user/images/settings.png" />

### Change your stake presets

A stake preset is an amount for the [stake](glossary.md#orders) control in the top bar
(\*\*Stake $**). The presets show there in the same order as keys `1` to `6`. The defaults
are $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000.

1. Go to **Trading** › **Stake presets**.
2. Type a new amount in a field.
3. Press `↵`, or leave the field. The toast `Stake presets saved` shows.

To remove a preset, click the X in its field. To add a preset, click **Add preset**.

| Rule | Message under the presets |
| - | - |
| You need at least 1 preset | `At least one preset` |
| You can have at most 6 presets | **Add preset** is greyed: `At most 6 presets` |
| Each preset is more than \$0 | `Preset 1: Must be more than 0` |
| Each preset is not more than your max order notional | `Preset 1: Above the max order notional ($25,000)` |

After a reload, the first preset is the active stake.

### Change a risk limit

The server checks every order against your risk limits. The screen cannot go around them.
Each field shows its unit, and below it the **ceiling**: the highest value that the server
allows, for example `Ceiling $50,000` or `Ceiling 120/min`. You cannot save a value above
the ceiling.

1. Go to **Risk limits**.
2. Type the new value. Until you save it, the line under the field reads
   `Unsaved · Enter to save`.
3. Press `↵`, or leave the field.
4. If the change makes the limit safer, it saves at once. A toast names it, for example
   `Max order notional saved`.
5. If the change makes the limit less safe, a dialog asks for your password. It names the
change, for example `Raising the max order notional needs the UI password`. The UI
password is the password you sign in with.
6. Type your password and click **Save**.

If you click **Cancel** in the dialog, the saved value comes back. A toast says so, for
example `Max order notional not raised`.

If the value cannot be saved, the line under the field gives the reason. Examples:

* `Above the ceiling ($50,000)`
* `Must be at least the max order notional ($25,000)`
* `Not saved · …`

## More options

### All risk limits

| Limit | What it controls | Default | Allowed values |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Max order notional** | The largest single order, price × size | \$25,000 | Up to the ceiling. Default ceiling \$50,000 |
| **Max position notional** | Your largest position in one market, with the new buy included | \$100,000 | Up to the ceiling. Default ceiling \$250,000 |
| **Max daily notional** | The total of the orders you place in one day. The day starts at 00:00 UTC | \$1,000,000 | Up to the ceiling. Default ceiling \$5,000,000 |
| **Max open orders** | The number of orders that wait on the book at one time | 100 | 0 up to the ceiling. Default ceiling 200 |
| **Max orders per minute** | The number of orders you place in any one minute | 60 | 0 up to the ceiling. Default ceiling 120 |
| **Price band** | How far, in ticks, a clicked price can be outside the best bid and ask | 10 ticks | 1 to 50 ticks |
| **Exit slippage** | How far, in ticks, an Exit can sell below the best bid | 5 ticks | 0 to 50 ticks |
| **Duplicate window** | The app refuses a second order with the same outcome, side, price and size within this time. 0 turns the check off | 1,500 ms | 0 to 10,000 ms |
| **Armed idle timeout** | Armed changes to Safe after this time with no trading action | 30 min | 1 to 240 min |
| **Max combo notional** | The largest stake for one combo, fees included | \$5,000 | Up to the ceiling. Default ceiling \$25,000 |
| **Max combo exposure** | The total cost of your open combos | \$25,000 | Up to the ceiling. Default ceiling \$100,000 |
| **Max combo legs** | The most legs in one combo | 10 | 2 to 50, and not above the ceiling. Default ceiling 50 |

The defaults suit a balance of about $100,000 to $500,000.

**An Exit has fewer limits.** An Exit only makes your position smaller. Thus these limits
do not stop it:

* **Max order notional**
* **Max position notional**
* **Max daily notional**. An Exit also does not count toward it.
* **Max open orders**
* **Price band**. The **Exit slippage** applies to an Exit instead.

The **Max orders per minute** and the **Duplicate window** apply to an Exit too.

**Rules between limits.** The form checks these rules:

* **Max position notional** and **Max daily notional** must be at least the **Max order
  notional**.
* **Max combo exposure** must be at least the **Max combo notional**.

**Zero is not unlimited.** **Max orders per minute** at 0 refuses every order. **Max open
orders** at 0 refuses every order except an Exit.

**Less safe** means one of these changes. Each one asks for your password, so a person who
gets into your browser session cannot loosen your limits:

* a higher limit
* a wider **Price band** or **Exit slippage**
* a longer **Armed idle timeout**
* a shorter **Duplicate window**
* a safety switch turned off

The dialog names the change, for example `Raising the price band needs the UI password`,
`Lowering the duplicate window needs the UI password` or
`Turning off cancel on shutdown needs the UI password`.

When you lower **Max order notional**, your stake presets do not change. Lower the
presets too. If you do not, a click with a larger preset is rejected.

### Safety switches

The switches are in **Safety**.

| Switch | What it does | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Cancel on shutdown** | The server cancels all open orders when it stops normally. A crash or a power cut skips this | On |
| **Dead-man heartbeat** | Polymarket cancels all open orders of this app if the server does not respond for about 10 seconds. This covers a crash, a lost connection and a frozen server | Off |

While the heartbeat is on, the server sends a signal to Polymarket every 5 seconds. If no
signal arrives for 10 seconds, Polymarket cancels the open orders that this app placed.
The cancel can come up to 5 seconds later. Orders that you placed on polymarket.com stay.

A switch saves when you change it. Turning a switch on saves at once. Turning a switch off
asks for your password.

With both switches off, the orders that you leave open stay on the book after the server
stops, as on polymarket.com. If a cancel at shutdown fails, you get a
`Cancel on shutdown failed` notification at the next start.

### Account

**Account** shows the account that the app trades for. The person who runs the server sets
all of it. The page never shows a key and never asks for one.

| Line | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Credentials** | `Connected` when the account works. Otherwise a status such as `Account error`, `Read-only` or `Not connected`, with the reason. See the [FAQ](faq.md) |
| **Wallet address (Deposit Wallet)** | The address of your Polymarket wallet, or `Not set` |
| **Signer address (Session Key)** | The address of the [Session Key](glossary.md#the-app) that signs your orders, or `Not set` |
| **Session Key expiry** | Shows only in the last 14 days before the Session Key expires (`Key expires in 3d`), and after it expires (`Session Key expired`) |

When the Session Key expiry line shows, tell the person who runs the server. They make a
new Session Key. The server settings are in the
[configuration reference](../configuration.md).

### Notifications

This section has the table of notification kinds and channels, in the groups **Trading**,
**Connection** and **Security**. Below the table are the **Volume** slider and the
**Send test** button. See
[Choose where notifications go](alerts-and-notifications.md#choose-where-notifications-go).

### Appearance

Choose **Dark**, **Light** or **System**. **System** follows the light or dark setting of
this device. The app saves the choice on the server, so it applies on every device.

You can also change the theme here:

* the sun or moon button in the top bar
* the menu on a phone
* the command palette: type `>`, then `Theme: dark`, `Theme: light` or `Theme: system`

### Hotkeys

**Hotkeys** lists the navigation keys. **Show all hotkeys** opens the full list, the same
list as `?`. See [Shortcuts](shortcuts.md).

### Session

**Session** shows if trading is on, and the result of the last geoblock check. The
geoblock check finds out if Polymarket allows trading from the location of the server.

| Line | What it shows |
| - | - |
| **Trading** | `Enabled` or `Off`. The text beside it says what trading needs: `Needs LIVE_TRADING=true and a passed geoblock check` |
| **Geoblock** | The result: `Not blocked`, `Blocked`, `Check failed` or `Not checked yet`. A place can follow, for example `Blocked · US-VA`. Then the time of the check, for example `Checked 1m ago` |

If the status cannot load, both lines read `Status unavailable`.

If **Trading** reads `Off`, tell the person who runs the server. Only they can turn trading
on.

| To | Do this |
| - | - |
| Sign out of this browser | Click **Log out**. It is in **Session**, in the top-bar menu and in the menu on a phone |
| Sign out on every device | Click **Log out everywhere**. It is in the same places. It ends every session of the app, this one included |

When you log out, trading changes to Safe. A session also ends after 60 minutes with no
activity, or 12 hours after you sign in.

## Good to know

* Risk limits and safety switches save one change at a time, in the order you make them.
* The ceilings protect you from a mistake when you type a value. The server reads them when it starts.
Only the person who runs the server can change them. See
[Settings you may want to change](../configuration.md#settings-you-may-want-to-change).
* **Price band**, **Exit slippage**, **Duplicate window** and **Armed idle timeout** have
fixed maximums, not a server ceiling.
* If the person who runs the server lowers a ceiling below your saved limit, the ceiling
  applies.
* A combo stake comes from the same presets. Thus the **Max order notional** also caps the
presets that you can use for a combo.
